Weathertex is made from forestry waste products via a low impact manufacturing process, it is one of very few materials resource made from recovered, renewable natural resources.
I started up the business in 1978 and quickly built a reputation for building warm, comfy houses with lower bills and environmental impact and it just snowballed. The business varied in size with up to 5 employees at certain times or just me alone. If I require assistance these days, I contract building designers via a ‘virtual office’ through Building Designers Australia, which is a fantastic organization.
Re think Building Materials
The book explores and tries to de-mystify the complex task of finding and evaluating sustainable materials. Materials science is a complex subject that is often communicated to consumers in a language they don’t understand or relate to. Manufacturers, suppliers and experts need to recognise that consumers are concerned and want to understand so they can make informed choices. My chapter is titled “Looking for value beyond the invoice: Some food for thought”. It explores the question of what is it apart from cost that might drive the uptake of sustainable materials. Key to this is working out the cost-benefit over the entire lifespan – not just the construction stage.
