How Weathertex is Made?
Weathertex Weatherboards is made by breaking down local hardwood, from sawmill tailings, and thinnings from managed forests, to its constituted fibres using steam and pressure. This eliminates the grains, knots and gum vein that cause natural timber Weatherboards to split and crack. No old growth hardwood is used, so the source of the timber is environmentally friendly.
The fibres are then strained in a liquid bath that removes all of the natural sugars and starches, which makes the finished product unattractive to termites and white ants. 3% natural wax is then added to improve the durability of the finished product. The 'wet-lap' as it is known is then reformed under great pressure and high temperature in one of four 'multi-daylight' presses. This not only thins the wet-lap to about 9.5mm, but also activates the natural lignins in the timber, which forms the 'glue' that holds the fibres together.
The end result is a very dense hardwood that has no artificial additives, and is of a random fibre pattern that eliminates delamination and promotes moisture resistance. It is this dense, random structure that allows the product to be successfully used in external applications and ideal for internal applications. It also allows nails to be driven close to edges without pre-drilling.
